Tuesday 30th December – Sixt to Samoens hiking (snow shoeing) *****sunny with blue skies:)

We had a long lie in reading and when we eventually got ready for the day we decided to walk into Samoens along the river with our new snoe shoes – our Christmas present to ourselves:) It is a glorious sunny blue sky day and although minus temperatures we certainly didn’t feel cold on the walk! We left the van in the car park at Sixt, our overnight spot, and had a chat with another VW van owner also parked here. He was hoping to have a few nights outside wild camping with his snow shoes – that’s certainly not on our list of things to do!! We set off through the village and past the Sixt cross country skiing area to where the path separates off. We had wondered whether we would actually need the snow shoes but we certainly did and they were worth their weight in gold! The path was very deep snow and the shoes just walk over the surface and make you feel very secure both up and downhill:) We have walked this route in reverse before and knew that we would soon we walking past a deep gorge and that there was a small chapel on the river bank where we could stop for our picnic. While we were eating, sitting on the step of the chapel a group of three snow shoers came from a small path which we hadn’t noticed so we decided to carry on our walk that way, making it a bit different to before. The scenery was amazing and the trees all covered in snow were a sight to see:) Our legs were certainly aching by the time we got to Samoens, 6.7km and about 3 hours! We had a quick look round the town but it seemed a bit less interesting compared to our previous visits and although we had intended to push the boat out and have a hot chocolate in a café, the one we liked the look of had a man sitting outside smoking a massive cigar so we gave it a miss! We were not quite sure where to catch the ski bus to get back to Sixt so decided the best option was to go to the Telecabin station. We walked along the tree lined road out of the village and were soon at the station waiting in the queue for the red bus with a group of 3 young welsh people who were very pleasant and said that the snow hadn’t been that brilliant up at the top and our beloved green Marvel run at Morillon was terrible! The ski bus is free to everyone so that was a result. The bus driver was a bit bonkers and took us through a village we had never even seen before but we were soon back in Sixt village. Although it had just got dark, we both still had our sunglasses on! Called in at the patisserie (Tiffany again – they have the monopoly on all the villages round here) and bought a very strange slim line artisanal loaf and a cake. Took more photos of the lovely lights across the river and returned to the van exhausted!! A welcome cuppa and the bread and cake then read and played cards – a good day:)
